A Reality for Nebraskan Families

While CARNE y ARENA gives individuals the opportunity to experience a fraction of what immigrants and refugees endure during their journey to the United States, it is a harrowing reality for many Nebraskan Families.

Nebraska is home to a growing immigrant population. Their journey to Nebraska can be dangerous, with families risking separation throughout their journey, once reaching the U.S./Mexico border, and while being apprehended by Customs and Border Patrol.

Often, they are held at detention centers along the southern border for weeks or longer, before being released and allowed to temporarily live with extended family members in Nebraska while they plead their cases in immigration court.

In particular, nearly 900 unaccompanied children from the U.S./Mexico border were resettled in Nebraska last year alone.

From Border Crossing to Nebraska

Departing Home Country

Individuals depart their home country to reach the United States-Mexico border. Many travel by bus, plane, train, or foot (often a combination of travel methods). This journey is incredibly dangerous and can be traumatizing.

Apprehension At The Border

An individual’s journey with U.S. Immigration Laws begins when they are apprehended and detained at the border. They are held in detention facilities, commonly called “hieleras” (Spanish for freezers or iceboxes). These facilities are extremely cold, have no beds, are frequently overcrowded, and routinely lacking in adequate food, water, and medical care.

Removal Proccedings

Once an individual is arrested, the ICE deportation officer will make an initial determination as to whether to place the person into removal proceedings and, if so, how to charge the person. Most often, the charge will be an unlawful entry into the U.S., which is a civil violation.

Release From Detention

A Customs and Border Patrol officer will determine whether an individual in immigration custody is eligible to be released on bond in the U.S. while they fight their case in immigration court.

CARNE y ARENA is presented for the first time in Nebraska, The installation opens in KANEKO galleries after numerous sold-out runs in the U.S. and abroad.
