For Immediate Release: August 8, 2024
OMAHA, NE – The Immigrant Legal Center + Refugee Empowerment Center (ILC+REC) is pleased to announce it has been awarded a total of $60,000 in grants from the United Way of the Midlands’ (UWM) 2024-2026 Community Impact Fund. This includes $25,000 for the Refugee Intensive Case Management (RICM) program and $35,000 for the Unaccompanied Children (UC) program. These funds will enhance our capacity to support some of the most vulnerable members of our community.
The RICM program is dedicated to serving refugees with acute health needs, including the elderly, individuals with chronic conditions, and those facing significant social adjustment challenges. This program provides long-term, culturally and linguistically responsive case management, ensuring that clients have access to essential services like medical care, mental health support, housing, and employment. Recently, the program made a significant impact on the life of a refugee woman who had been misdiagnosed for 25 years. Through the culturally appropriate services provided in her native language, she received the correct diagnosis and treatment. This intervention has not only improved her mental health but also her overall quality of life, allowing her to better integrate into her new community.
The UC program focuses on supporting immigrant children who arrive in Nebraska without parents or guardians. This program is crucial as ILC+REC is the only service provider in the state that offers both high-quality pro bono immigration legal services and coordinated case management to these especially vulnerable children. One recent success story involves a young client who, with the support of a dedicated social worker, was able to navigate a challenging guardianship case. The child’s journey to secure stable immigration status was marked by hurdles such as transportation and financial barriers. However, with the consistent guidance and support from ILC+REC, the child met all necessary requirements, including consistent school attendance, which was pivotal in their legal process.
These grants were awarded through the efforts of a dedicated group of community volunteers who meticulously reviewed applications. They recognized the vital role that these programs play in fostering a thriving, inclusive community. Their commitment ensures that this funding will directly contribute to meaningful and positive changes, providing critical support to those who need it most.
